Kids Helpline @ School books in 2,000 students in a week

By: yourtown 14 Nov 2014 Kids Helpline

Last month, teachers booked 2,000 Australian primary school students into Kids Helpline @ School sessions in just one week.

HELP. SUPPORT. COUNSELLING.

This was the highest level of requests for sessions since the program began last year.

In the last six months almost 8,500 primary school students have been signed up for the program which consists of classroom sessions with a counsellor and is designed to improve mental health literacy, encourage help seeking and promote resilience.

Teachers are becoming more aware of the sessions and the support they give to the social and emotional wellbeing of their students in line with units in the National Curriculum.

It also shows that when we speak openly about mental health, as we did during the recent Mental Health Week, teachers will respond to the support we can provide for their students. Wendy Protheroe, Kids Helpline General Manager.

We are so proud of this program which is talking about help seeking in language young people understand and breaking down barriers for children who are afraid or anxious to reach out for support.

If young people want to talk to someone they can call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or use email or web counselling services.
