Mental health is worth talking about

By: yourtown 05 Oct 2014 Kids Helpline

Mental health affects everyone and will be under the spotlight during Mental Health Week from October 5-12.

TALK ABOUT IT

About half of the Australian population will experience a mental health issue directly, but many others including family members, carers, friends and colleagues will also be affected.

All BoysTown services promote the importance of mental and emotional wellbeing for children, young people and families.

Last year, mental health concerns were the number one issue amongst children and young people who contacted Kids Helpline.

Our counsellors delivered more than 24,000 counselling sessions to clients who were identified as having a mental health issue.

Every 60 seconds a child or young person reaches out to Kids Helpline looking for someone to care and listen as they struggle with issues such as suicide, mental illness and family problems. Tracy Adams – BoysTown CEO

To kick-start a national conversation about mental health, the ABC is launching Mental As a week of distinctive programming for Mental Health Week, and BoysTown joins them in inviting all Australians to talk about mental health.

We will be talking about mental health every day this week on our blog. Why don’t you join us?

Subscribe to the blog, visit the ABC Mental As website, make a donation and most importantly start a conversation with family, friends, colleagues or even a stranger! Help raise awareness because Mental Health is worth talking about.

If young people want to talk to someone they can call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or use email or web counselling services.
