Talk about mental health

By: yourtown 10 Oct 2014 Kids Helpline

Today is World Mental Health Day (WMHD) and we are asking people to reach out and talk about mental health.

REACH OUT

One in five Australians, regardless of age, income, education and culture, will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime. Three million Australians are living with anxiety or depression.

Last year, mental health concerns were the number one issue amongst children and young people who contacted Kids Helpline. Contacts to our Parentline service about mental health and emotional wellbeing showed the highest increase since 2012. Almost 60% of our most disadvantaged Job Services clients suffer from poor emotional well-being and/or have mental health concerns.

So please pay attention to those around you and if you notice something different, a change of eating habits, a change in sleeping habits, someone seeking their own company more or losing self-confidence – reach out.

Talk to them about it and make sure they know that someone cares and that there are places to go for help.

Help raise awareness because mental health is worth talking about.

If young people want to talk to someone they can call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or use email or web counselling services.
