BoysTown was pleased to report on positive outcomes for very young children in the Expressive Therapies programs, at the 15th International Mental Health Conference at the Gold Coast last week.

ART. MUSIC. PLAY.

BoysTown's Senior Researcher Jenni Southwell and National Community Services Manager Elisabeth Kobierski presented information about the Glugor Young Parents Program and the Family Violence Refuge Services, outlining the significantly positive results of Expressive Therapies.

BoysTown’s Expressive Therapies program helps children who have experienced trauma find their voice; helping them build resiliency through Art, Music and Play.

It’s never too early to work with very young children. They can participate in therapy, given the right tools – people, setting, resources – and can respond magically with the right combination. Elisabeth Kobierski, National Community Services Manager

Using the standardised preschool assessment tool – the Child Behaviour Check List – pre-intervention and post-intervention assessments reported significant reduction across a number of indicators such as aggressive behaviour, as well as noting a reduction in sleep and attention problems.

BoysTown is able to offer Expressive Therapy programs thanks to the support of the Margaret Pemberton Foundation; working with young children and their parents to explore and process their experiences of trauma, neglect and abuse.
